VFD Regulations took effect January 1

Jan

3

2017

Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) final rules officially became effective January 1, 2017. Under the new regulations, many antibiotics previously available in over-the-counter products now require veterinary oversight.

To navigate the new regulations, producers may need to work more closely with their veterinarians to continue their same feed protocols. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website outlines the key elements of a VCPR and additional pertinent VFD information at www.fda.gov.

Producers may want to consider removing products containing antibiotics from animal feeding protocols where the use of such products is now restricted. The opportunity to evaluate the use of antibiotics in food animal production may lead producers to use products that promote overall animal health, rather than target specific illnesses.

“Taking the time to evaluate the effectiveness of current feeding protocols can result in improved efficiency in management practices,” said William A. Zimmer, DVM, President of Bio-Vet, Inc. “Microbial and nutritional supplements support animal health and are also versatile enough to complement existing protocols.”

For more information, contact your local Bio-Vet sales representative or dealer, or call 1-800-246-8381.

VFD Regulations effective January 1, 2017

Dec

15

2016

Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) final rules that must be implemented next year will change the way feed-grade antibiotics are used in animal production.

Under the new regulations, which become effective January 1, 2017, many antibiotics previously available in over-the-counter products will require veterinary oversight and a veterinary feed directive for use. Extra-label use of antibiotics for growth and feed efficiency purposes will be disallowed.

To navigate the new regulations, producers may need to work more closely with their veterinarians to establish veterinarian-client-patient relationships (VCPR). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website outlines the key elements of a VCPR and additional pertinent VFD information at www.fda.gov.

Ensuring animal health is always a priority for producers, who may consider removing products containing antibiotics from animal feeding protocols where the use of such products may now be restricted. While no replacements for antibiotics exist, the opportunity to evaluate the use of antibiotics in food animal production may lead producers to use products that promote overall animal health.

Animals experience significant stress during challenging periods, which disrupts healthy microbial activity in the digestive tract. When this occurs, pathogens can develop, and animals become more susceptible to disease. Microbial products support animal health at birth, and throughout challenging periods, by populating the intestine with beneficial bacteria to aid healthy immune function.

Bio-Vet Introduces Stainless Steel Balling Guns

Jul

28

2016

Bio-Vet, Inc., has introduced three new balling guns made from a combination of durable stainless steel and PVC components. The new applicators may be used to easily administer QuadriCal® calcium boluses, as well as most adult cattle boluses, capsules or magnets.

Key features include a rounded metal tip with smooth edges, which is safer for cows.  A flexible rubber insert retains boluses in the barrel until positioned properly.

The three new balling guns are:

  • GN-1250 – with a 26mm (inside diameter) stainless steel barrel, this holds five QuadriCal® MINI boluses (one feeding), or most standard sized adult cattle capsules or boluses.
  • GN-1500 – 32mm stainless steel barrel with a short-stroke plunger to hold three QuadriCal® original boluses (one feeding).
  • GN-1501 – 32mm stainless steel barrel with a longer stroke design; this can hold three QuadriCal® original boluses plus two adult cattle capsules or boluses.

They also have a hollow plunger design that allows the balling gun to double as a drencher for applying oral liquids. The guns are manufactured by Bio-Vet, Inc. in Wisconsin, and are available through Bio-Vet sales representatives, dealers and suppliers, or from the company.

QuadriCal® Helps Calcium Persist in Blood: Field Trial

Apr

25

2016

Cows receiving QuadriCal® had total serum calcium levels about 10% higher than initial levels for about 12 hours in a recent field trial. After 12 hours, the total serum calcium level slowly decreased back to about 5% higher than initial levels by 24 hours after the QuadriCal® dose was given.  This timing coincides with recommendations to administer a second dose of QuadriCal® about 12 hours after the initial dose.

This study was conducted in a large, commercial dairy in Utah. Cows were housed in a free stall barn and fed a total mixed ration. All animals were fed a negative DCAD ration precalving. All cows included in the study were in their second lactation or older.

For more information, or to obtain a summary of the field trial, contact your local Bio-Vet sales representative, or call 1-800-246-8381.

Field Trial Shows QuadriCal® Increased Blood Calcium

Feb

25

2016

Cows receiving QuadriCal® had numerically higher average serum (blood) calcium levels than control cows at all time points in a recent field trial. Average serum calcium of cows receiving QuadriCal® was significantly higher (p=0.006) than control cows one hour after initial oral calcium supplementation.

Increase in serum calcium from baseline to one hour after receiving oral calcium was numerically greater for cows receiving QuadriCal® than for control cows not receiving oral calcium.

Only cows receiving QuadriCal® had average serum calcium levels above the commonly proposed cut-off point of 8.6 mg/dl for subclinical hypocalcemia.

Three QuadriCal® boluses (one feeding) were given to each cow after calving, and again 12 hours later. No supplemental calcium was given to the control group.

This study was conducted in a large, commercial dairy with high producing Holsteins in California. Anionic salts were included in the dry cow diet. All cows were in their second lactation or older.

QuadriCal® Shows Positive Effects on Milk Production in Field Trial

Nov

11

2015

Cows given QuadriCal® showed an economic advantage due to increased milk production compared to cows given a positive control in a recent field trial. Assuming a milk price of $15.00/cwt., the cows supplemented with QuadriCal® calcium boluses produced $104.78 more worth of fat corrected milk than cows receiving the positive control.

In this trial, a positive control, which was a calcium supplement, was given to a group of cows postcalving.  Cows receiving QuadriCal® produced significantly more fat corrected milk (FCM) at second milk test (p=0.025).

Cows receiving QuadriCal® also produced numerically more fat corrected milk at first, second and third test, and numerically more projected 305 FCM and 305 ME (Mature Equivalent) for the lactation.

This study was conducted in a large, commercial dairy in California. Cows were housed in a free stall barn and fed a total mixed ration. Anionic salts were included in the dry cow diet. All cows were in their second lactation or older. Average lactation for this group was 3.31.

For more information, or to obtain a summary of the field trial, contact your local Bio-Vet sales representative, or call 1-800-246-8381.

Bio-Vet Introduces QuadriCal® for Organic Use

May

27

2015

Bio-Vet has introduced a formulation of QuadriCal® calcium boluses that may be considered for organic use. The ‘O’ QuadriCal® MINI boluses contain two sources of calcium:  calcium chloride and calcium sulfate.

QuadriCal®, QuadriCal® MINI and now ‘O’ QuadriCal® MINI boluses all contain 50 or more grams of calcium per feeding. All three QuadriCal® products also contain niacin to aid liver function during negative energy balance, and vitamin D3, which is critical for calcium utilization in the body. ‘O’ QuadriCal® MINI is available in boxes of 6 or 40 feedings.

Research indicates that subclinical milk fever affects 50 percent of cows second lactation and older in the U.S., and 25 percent of first-lactation heifers.*

Help Your Cows “Chill Out” with Generator™ DFMs

Aug

5

2014

Profits can evaporate when the weather turns hot. St-Pierre et al. (2003) calculated annual losses of $897 million for the dairy industry in the U.S. due to hot weather even when economically optimal heat abatement systems were used. This loss was based on a milk price of $13/cwt (very low compared to current prices), and amounts to almost $100 per cow per year.

The analysis included effects of heat stress on dry matter intake, milk production, reproduction, culling, and death of both young stock and adult cows. In addition, they considered three heat abatement systems and chose the economically optimal system for each state: fans or forced ventilation, fans and sprinklers, or high-pressure evaporative cooling. Annual losses per cow in several key dairy states included:1

  • Texas -$698
  • Florida -$676
  • New Mexico -$168
  • California -$110
  • Wisconsin -$72

Temperatures above 77° F force cows to use energy to cool themselves through panting, energy that would otherwise go toward milk production and reproduction. Cattle also eat less often and do so when it’s cooler, but consume more at each feeding. Ration sorting also occurs in conjunction with a higher consumption rate, and favors concentrated components. This can lead to rumen acidosis or SARA (sub-acute rumen acidosis).

High-producing cows are more sensitive to heat because of their high feed intakes. When temperatures exceed 90° F, dry matter intake starts to drop (8-12%) and milk production losses of 20-30% occur. These losses may exceed 10-25 pounds per day.2 It is imperative to maintain intake in order to minimize these production losses.

Direct-fed microbial products can help aid digestion, improve feed utilization and keep dry matter intake up during hot weather. An evaluation of six trials feeding Generator Direct Fed Microbial to cows experiencing heat effects showed a 4% average improvement in production compared to control cows.3 Trial participants also reported improved fat test.

Bio-Vet DFMs - including Generator ULTRA, ELITE and D - contain yeast, which produce enzymes and B vitamins and maintain intake during hot weather. Supplementing the daily ration with Generator Direct Fed Microbials will assist rumen fermentation, reduce susceptibility to acidosis, and help cows maintain appetite and milk production during hot summer days.
